‘Family Values’ chronicles the intimate moments belonging to my family. We are two middle-aged white lesbians, one previously incarcerated black man in his late thirties, one queer black man in his early thirties, and myself, a white female in her early twenties born through artificial insemination. My moms, brothers and I defy the heteronormative American family ideal and are comprised of much more than the descriptors listed above, however these labels are part of our identity and have greatly impacted our individual experiences.
These images are a piece of how I advocate for my family’s rights. I ask the viewer to reconceive their notions of family through tender portraits of each of us. The present political climate in The United States converses with this series.
